Buying a used car in Uganda – A guide

Buying a used car in Uganda is usually for the obvious reason of it being cheaper than the new options.

Despite the myth that used cars tend to be poor quality vehicles, most modern used cars lately can be found in great state.

Many have been built with very durable engines that can be sustained for many years with normal and regular service. Also, depending on the vehicle, most can withstand several years in varying weather conditions.

Here are ten things to consider when buying a used car in Uganda :-

Determine your budget range

This should be the very first step one takes before they can make any moves. You should be able to determine your budget i.e. how much you’re willing to spend.

One should also be clear about how they intend to finance the purchase, which could either be through a bank loan, cash or instalments’ payment.

Make sure that your budget includes incidentals, such as any extra parts that might be required as well as any possible inspections by a mechanic.

Consider the cars best suited for your needs

The child in you might want a fancy looking sports car while your family actually requires an SUV so make your shortlist based on your actual needs not wants. Also factor in the maintenance cost of certain car models.

Otherwise you can certainly always own more than one car to cater to your individual lifestyle requirements.

Always test drive the car

Every prospective car buyer in Uganda ought to spend some time behind the wheel of their car of interest.

This allows you to familiarize yourself with the car and assess how the car responds to you in relation to your driving abilities.

Endeavour to test-drive this vehicle in different conditions including the unpaved roads and the highway to assess the vehicle’s suspension and keenly listen in for any unexpected sounds that might indicate underlying mechanical issues.

Arrange a pre-purchase inspection

Have your trusted mechanic take a look at the car prior to purchase and the seller should acknowledge this decision in good faith as some sellers may not know about some of the issues. This could help uncover some issues under the hood that may require minor fixing, or expose some very costly ones that could have otherwise made your purchase an unworthy and expensive one.

Look out for reviews online

There are a couple of auto-review websites out there that could be helpful in providing reviews of various models including used-car reviews. You may find helpful information related to your intended purchase that you could have otherwise ignored. Video reviews might also come in handy for a quick visual rundown of the ownership experience, forexample, a quick search via Youtube will show you tons of independent car reviews by renown vloggers.

Negotiate

While buying a used car in Uganda, it is imperative to note that most used car dealers here will certainly be open to negotiating. While there could be some limits that you must be aware of, there is no shame in negotiating. Try to stick within your initial budget.

Transfer of vehicle ownership

On top of verifying the ownership of the vehicle ensure to have the actual seller/owner initiate the transfer in your names. This is even more important when buying a used car from a third party who isn’t a licensed dealer.

Uganda Revenue Authority(URA) has especially been very keen on this process in the recent past, in fact, there is a policy that obligates sellers to ensure that the vehicle is transferred immediately to the buyer upon completion of purchase.

Luckily enough, this is an easy process in Uganda that can be fully conducted online either individually or through an agent by use of a Tax Identification Number(TIN). And it is also the most legitimate(legal) way to verify ownership of your vehicle.

In conclusion

Once all the above has been duly completed, endeavour to verify that all the paperwork is in order and any information that relates to the purchase of the used car has been provided to you. You do not want any surprises to crop up once the payment has been completed.
